Willshee's Waste and Recycling - Case Study

About Willshee’s

Willshee’s Waste & Recycling is the largest privately owned independent waste and recycling company in the Midlands. It’s a family run business which was set up by the late Keith Willshee back in 1984 with one skip truck, and today is under the leadership of Keith’s eldest son, Dean. Over the past 10 years, Willshee’s has focused on achieving zero waste to landfill, treating waste and supplying it to energy plants throughout the UK and Europe. Willshee’s current goal and focus is to remove even more recyclables from collected waste and supply these materials for reuse.

“We would encourage any new business to move to East Staffordshire as long as they don’t want to offer waste solutions!”
Dean Willshee, Managing Director, Willshee’s Waste & Recycling

Why East Staffordshire?

East Staffordshire attracts a wide variety of industries which require waste management solutions, so we are lucky to be in a region with massive growth potential.

East Staffordshire is the home of our founder and his family, so the location was not ‘chosen’ as such back in 1984. However, the family and our employees are very proud of the business it has become with 120 members of staff now employed permanently, offering security and a chance to be part of our zero waste to landfill mission.

We have been established now for 38 years and have no plans to leave. Our aim is to continue our growth by 20% year on year over the next decade.

We are members of the Burton & District Chamber of Commerce and value their support and commitment to the area. We are proud of the region and its network as a hub of activity and industry, delivering growth for the economy, especially as we move forward from the pandemic.

Willshee’s has invested over £10 million in state-of-the-art recycling equipment to offer the most advanced facilities in the region. We have also invested heavily in new fleet and in our team, having made a number of key senior appointments in the last year.

Our customers have trust in our recycling processes as they provide complete transparency. Our experts have many years of experience, ensuring that all processes are compliant and offering excellent customer service. There is also an online customer portal which allows clients to place orders, monitor progress and receive a full audit trail. The portal is receiving excellent feedback and is just one of the reasons for the current growth trend.

What are the biggest issues for you running this business?

“One of our biggest issues is, as the company continues to grow, making sure we have the right people in place with the right attitude. We can train our staff, and do, but having the right approach is something people bring with them. Our customers are very important to us, but it is our staff that look after our customers, so getting this area right is of paramount importance.” Dean Willshee.
