Selective Licensing Scheme Review

East Staffordshire Borough Council has recently carried out a review of its Selective Licensing Scheme. Designated in 2017, the scheme focused on improving the condition and management of privately rented accommodation in the eastern area of Anglesey, focussing on the following streets:

  • All Saints Croft
  • Bailey Street
  • Blackpool Street
  • Branston Road
  • Broadway Street
  • King Street
  • Queen Street
  • Rose Cottage Gardens
  • Trent Street
  • Watson Street
  • Wood Street

The Selective Licensing Scheme has now been in place for five years, having recently been extended in September 2022, and as such a review and evaluation of the scheme has recently been conducted.

Since the introduction of the scheme, the Council has granted 371 Selective Licenses and undertaken 539 inspections and revisits. The Council’s review of the scheme also shows that 71% of inspections identified hazards around fire safety, damp and mould, and electrical issues.

In the five years since the scheme first launched, a much stronger relationship between Council officers, landlords and tenants has developed, leading to a much greater level of co-operation and communication between all parties.

Cllr Bernard Peters, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing Standards, said: “Despite a difficult couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council has worked closely with landlords and tenants across Anglesey to ensure living conditions in privately rented properties are at a satisfactory level.”

“With the extension of the Selective Licensing Scheme in September 2022, the Council continues to build upon its relationship with local landlords and tenants and is committed to assessing living conditions across East Staffordshire.”
