Burton and Winshill’s In Bloom entries, supported by ID Verde, were officially recognised at the RHS Britain in Bloom awards, held on Monday 21st October, with Winshill claiming gold and an Urban Community winner, with Burton picking up a silver gilt in the Small City category.
An outstanding run of consecutive gold medals in the Heart of England In Bloom competition led to an unprecedented achievement of having two finalists from East Staffordshire in the national finals for the first time.
In addition to their category win, Winshill received a judge’s discretionary award for “Outstanding Volunteer Involvement” which recognised their efforts in recruiting, engaging with, supporting and retaining volunteers.
Cllr Dennis Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “It is wonderful to see both Burton and Winshill rewarded as part of this year’s Heart of England In Bloom competition. I would like to thank all of those who have worked so hard to help us achieve In Bloom success and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve next year!”.
In addition to the national awards, East Staffordshire entries claimed a total of 34 regional awards including 16 gold’s in 2024.
In Bloom judges said: “Winshill’s strength lies in its people. The community spirit is undeniable, and the Bloom initiative has served as a powerful tool to bring everyone together. With a clear vision for the future and a commitment to continuous improvement, Winshill is a shining example of how horticulture can transform a community, making it a better place for all.”
