In August 2020 East Staffordshire Borough Council declared a ‘Climate Emergency’, with a pledge to make the Council’s operations and activities carbon neutral by 2040 and an aspiration to make the Borough carbon neutral by 2040.
A recent review of the Council’s Climate Change and Nature Action Plan shows a 35.1% reduction in CO2 emissions across the Borough between 2005 and 2019. Similarly, the Council itself has seen a 40.2% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2009/10 and 2021/22.
Following the publication of the government’s Net Zero Strategy, East Staffordshire Borough Council now aims for the Borough to become carbon neutral by 2050 rather than 2040, as stated in the original Climate
Emergency pledge. This will align the Council with central government and the County Council.
Cllr Ray Faulkner, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The Climate Change Action Plan provides great insight into the Council’s progress, with 73.7% of targets being reported as ‘green’, meaning those targets are on track or have already been achieved.
The Council is committed to achieving carbon neutrality, working in partnership with the people and businesses of East Staffordshire to ensure we continue to see carbon emission levels decrease.”
